Iivarra

Iivaara is a popular site with stunning views over Kuusamo from the top and of course the northern lights. Historically, people gathered on the top of Iivaara on summer nights to watch the midsummer sun and the surrounding landscapes.Iivaara has long been a hunting and fishing destination. It is known among bird enthusiasts and for its abundance of decaying wood on the slopes, making it an excellent spot for observing old forest and salt marsh species.

Hossa’s rocks

Juuma-Ölkky is the largest of the three canyon lakes in Finland that have formed into a crack in the earth. The birth of the cruel Ölkky dates back to the formation of the Earth’s surface more than 2 billion years ago. Julman-Ölkky (map name Ylä-Ölkky) is about three kilometres long and about 10 metres wide at its narrowest point. Its depth is 50 m. The height of the cliffs at the highest point is about 50 m.

On the SUP board, in addition to physical performance, you can admire the incredible beauty of Hossa rocks painting and the entire canyon lake in peace.

Juuma ölkyn Ylitys:

The Ölkky crossing is a 5 km route that follows the Ölkky rush in the southern part of the canyon and crosses the lake via a suspension bridge. You descend a stone staircase to the bridge and climb up a rocky slope and metal spiral staircase on the opposite bank. The route is one of the most demanding circular routes in Hossa National Park due to the rocky terrain and ascents and descents.

Hossa’s rocks

Hossa’s rock paintings are located along the waterway already used in ancient times. Värikallio’s paintings differ from other ancient paintings in Finland. Small, stick-like moose patterns are hardly known elsewhere. The human figure with a triangular face marked with eyes and nose is also peculiar. Most often, images in rock paintings are associated with hunting magic. The painting rocks may also have been places of worship associated with shamanism.

On the surface of the rock of Värikallio, 61 distinct patterns related to hunting and shamanism have been identified. It is rare that no boat photographs have been found of Värikallio. They are painted from a boat or ice. The paintings may have been used to mark a route or depict events. The rock paintings in Värikallio were officially discovered in 1977.

Julma-Ölkky is the largest of the three canyon lakes in Finland that were formed in a fissure in the earth, which was formed when the Earth’s surface was formed over 2 billion years ago. Julma-Ölkky is about 3 km long and about 10 m wide at its narrowest point. The depth of the canyon lake is 50 m. The height of the cliffs at the highest point is about 50 m. In the beginning of Julma-Ölkky there is a small rock painting depicting two people and a moose or deer. It is the northernmost of the rock paintings found in Finland. In the middle of Kanjonijärvi, north of the suspension bridge, there is a vaulted rock crevice, devils church According to the story, a soothsayer considered the rock crevice to be his church and place for magic.

The Kokalmus tour introduces you to Hossa’s most magnificent scenery and offers each other’s finer resting places. The Kokalmus tour goes through Muikkupuro to Hoiluansärkkä and past the reindeer stables towards the Kokalmus lean-to. From Kokalmus, the route returns to the shore of Pitkä-Hoilua. The trail is easy to walk and mostly flat, where you can focus on enjoying nature.
